An update
I had an unusually uneventful New Year's Eve. I sat down in the La-Z-Boy around 8:30 to pet the cat and finish reading the new issue of Rain Taxi, and within ten minutes I was sound asleep. At some point I got up long enough to move over to the bed. And then I slept 'til noon. Obviously I had a more sleep-deprived vacation than I thought (and it's all the fault of Dr. Lunatic Supreme with Cheese which repeatedly kept me up to 3am; I shall have to carefully ration my playtime in future).
I noticed as I was posting from Chicago that it's been a ridiculously long time since I updated this journal. I've gotten in the bad habit of composing my entries in my head while in the car or on the plane and then never actually transcribing them. I've always had that habit with email (if you've ever written me email and not gotten a response, it's probably because I responded in my head and then forgot I hadn't actually typed it), but I'd mostly avoided it with the journal. I suppose I'll have to try and do a bit of catching up.
Christmas swag this year included: The Encyclopedia of Chicago, which I expect will provide hours of fun and enlightening browsing; Joel on Software, an easier-to-read form of the columns at his web site; Nancy Kress' Crucible; Muriel Sparks' The Finishing School; Jacqueline Carey's Banewreaker; Adam Smith's Theory of Moral Sentiments; and a bunch of other books that I can't remember off-hand because they're still in my mother's trunk (she took them home for me in her checked luggage so I wouldn't have to tote them around on my trip down to Chicago via bus and L).
And, of course, I had plenty of books arrive in the mail the last two weeks, and then I had to buy some more while I was at Barnes & Noble stocking up on 50%-off cat calendars. I got Elizabeth Bear's Hammered, Mark Budz's Crache, Lawrence Watt-Evans' Dragon Venom, the new Night Shade Books edition of Iain M. Banks' The State of the Art, Charles Stross' The Family Trade, two new books from Delirium, Brian Keene's Sympathy for the Devil and Jeffrey Thomas' Aaaiiieee!!!, Ray Garton's Night Life, Gardner Dozois's Morning Child and Other Stories, The Best Australian Science Fiction Writing edited by Rob Gerrand, a signed copy of Bruce Boston's The Complete Accursed Wives (that one as a prize in the Strange Horizons fund drive drawing), Douglas Clegg's mammoth collection The Machinery of Night, Suzy McKee Charnas' Stagestruck Vampires and Other Phantasms, F. Paul Wilson's Little Beige Book of Nondescript Stories, Carol Emshwiller's Carmen Dog, and Scattered, Covered, Smothered edited by Jason Erik Lundberg.
I really need more hours in the day so I can get caught up on reading all the great books that have been coming out lately.
