I suppose this can be taken of evidence either that a University of Chicago education forever dooms one to an unabashedly pretentious and unreadably academic style of writing or that this Flesch-Kincaid scale is entirely frivolous twattle. Unfortunately, I fear the former is the more likely scenario.

Not so

Have you ever read the book The Pooh Perplex (by Frederick C. Crews)? Though not the funniest 'essay' in the collection(from a perspective external to those of us who survived the institution), "A Complete Analysis of Winnie-the-Pooh" uses only 50 cent words, sentences a paragraph in length, and only references other UofC publications. It's a hoot.

I believe I have read that particular essay (probably on uchi.* or some place like that while I was there). But I haven't read the complete collection, so it's now on its way to me from amazon.

I think it's more the latter, actually. Depending on the day I survey it, without having made appreciable changes in my journal, it grants different scores to my journal. Thus far, I have ranged between 10 and 5 with a hit at almost every one between.
