Fuck Obama

So, Obama has revealed what he really thinks of his GLBT constituents, inviting bigot Rick Warren to give the inaugural invocation.

I can't say as I'm entirely surprised, but I am disappointed at just how quickly Obama has shown himself to be just another simpering politician willing to associate with bigots and other scum.

I emailed my disgust to Ms. Mehta. If this happens, he has lost my vote in 2012.

Oh lordy. Well, I heard it wasn't actually he that made the choice, but a committee... don't know if he had to rubber stamp it or not, but hopefully the uproar will cause him to take a closer look at their selection.

I'm wondering if a committee recommended Warren to give the invocation, and not Obama himself.
If it was his idea, it was either his idea of being extending an olive branch to the evangelicals and considering himself inclusionary, or perhaps an overcompensation for the Rev. Wright thing...

Dear President-Elect Obama,

I believed in you. I believed in change. All of which makes it hard for me to believe that you have chosen to begin spitting in the faces of the Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Americans who supported you on the very day you take the oath of office. If you cannot understand why it is wrong to give a hatemongering champion of discrimination like Rev. Rick Warren a featured and solemn role in your historic inauguration then there is no hope that you understand us, our pain, our daily struggle or that you even care.

I believed we were building a new America together. Please do not prove that belief to be falsely founded. I want to believe in the future don’t take it away on day one.

My lack of faith that he wouldn't just lay down for committee decisions and be any other politician is exactly why I didn't vote for him. My gut said he talked a good line, but then he picked a douche like Biden for VP? Nah, sorry, that was a committee decision and he went for it, and it sent me a pretty clear message. I wanted to believe; but ultimately I couldn't.

I felt in particular like a lot of the GLBT folks I know were willing to believe things that were the opposite of what Obama had even said himself, out of a desperate desire for hope. I can relate, but... sigh.

So yeah, I threw away my vote with a third-party candidate. ;-)

Now, this may seem a little out of place, given the other comments, but I'm actually rather pleased by Obama's choice here (granted, this is after I read his remarks on it). It's another sign, to me, that he can listen to people he disagrees with, take them seriously, consider their ideas, accept some while rejecting others, and find a way to work with them in spite of their differences. In other words, he's open-minded, even to people who aren't. Yes, Rev. Warren took a stand I disagreed with, and backed it up with incorrect evidence, which irks me, but he also seems to be behind at least some social justice issues, which is more than I can say for most evangelicals. If Obama wanted to reach out to them, there are few better choices he could have made. And once more, my perennial reminder about candidates for elected office: if you want one you agree with 100%, run.

Surprise! He's just another politician, willing to fuck over anyone and anything for personal benefit.

Though frankly, he's probably going to be less damaging to the GLBT community than Bush has been, if not just because he's not obsessed with catering to narrow-minded religious bigots and no one else.

Maybe Obama should read this book.
