    Dear Mr. Hatchell:

Thank you for your letter regarding H.R. 1157, the Freedom to Read Protection Act of 2003, which would exempt bookstores and libraries from orders requiring the production of records and information for foreign intelligence investigations.

I appreciate your position that the privacy rights of citizens should be protected as much as possible, particularly as they relate to their choice of reading materials. The war on terrorism and the associated heightened security concerns in the U.S. should not cause our government to overzealously and needlessly scale back the civil rights and liberties of its citizens.

H.R. 1157 has been referred to the House Judiciary and Intelligence Committees. I will certainly keep your views in mind should the opportunity to vote on this legislation arise.

Again, I appreciate your letter and please feel free to contact me on this or any other issue of concern.

    Sincerely,

    DAVID PRICE
    Member of Congress

I'm so glad to know that Rep. Price can't be bothered to have an opinion on something that isn't coming up for a vote in the near future. Just further confirmation of my belief that most politicians are utterly useless excuses for human beings.
